NaNoWriMo: Week 2 Update

Hey guys! This month I’m going to be doing some general updates on my NaNoWriMo progress. You’ll see how I’m progressing, get some insider looks at what I’ve written each week, and see some of the stuff that goes into creating a book!

NaNoWriMo: Week 2

Projects: Star Supernova (Blue Star Series, Star Trilogy #2), Prequel to The Curse of Broken Shadows

Word Count: 34,020 / 50,000 (updated count on the NaNo website)

Details: Well, I predicted this week would not be as groundbreaking as last week. I’m no longer rewriting the scenes that I had previously finished for Star Supernova so all of those 10K words over the last seven days were brand new. That doesn’t include any weekend writing because that’s a boundary I’ve set for myself. The nice thing is that to reach my goal of 50K at the end of the month, I only need a daily word count of about 800 words which is much more reasonable for my current circumstances. The nice thing is that I’m at an action-packed scene in TCOBS prequel so that’s making the words come quickly. The hard part is that those scenes actually require a lot of brain power so when they are done, I feel as exhausted as my characters. But… fight scenes!

Music: I’m still doing a shuffle kick. I’ve got Apple Music and their little radio shuffle station 'made for me’ is quite spectacular. I’ve found a few new songs recently that have become favorites. Always good for when I’m going back through and doing some quick edits (which I like to do the next day). If you’re interested in some of the ‘writing’ music I listen to, check out my spotify playlist.

When I’m not writing: I’m actually re-reading TCOBS for some notes on what I want to include in my prequel (characters, settings, etc). It’s fun to go back and see the story again with a new mindset. It’s also helping me plan the outline for book 2. I’m also going back and editing the stories that I have already finished for this prequel (which is a collection of short stories following Brela and how she became who she is in TCOBS). I’m feeling pretty good about what I have to share with you soon!

Distractions: Oh man, I’ve spent some time making decorations and planning some of the wedding party things we’ll be doing in December. It’s not a huge time-suck, but it definitely keeps me distracted. I’ve also been changing up some of my workout routine so that contributes to some extra aches and tiredness during the day. The real ‘distraction’ that isn’t really a distraction is that I’m virtually attending a conference this week. It’s all about writing and the business of publishing - which is AMAZING - but it also takes time away from writing. I don’t mind, because I’m learning so much!

Excerpt (from prequel):

“Is that the suxa we just caught?” Emril asked, blinking at the monster now clawing its way out of the pit.

“Too small. That’s Ceirdephal,” Brela grunted.

He let out a sigh. “Well, that’s not our problem then.” He glanced down at her with a raised brow. “That’s not our problem, right?”

Brela grimaced. Technically, no, their job was done the minute the female suxa dropped into the pit, but watching the sprites scream and run from the escaping male didn’t exactly sit well with her either. After the efforts Oni had made about getting answers for her, she couldn’t just let this beast—the sprite’s protection—get away.

She let out a long whine and stared at the sky, cursing the gods. Why couldn’t Dernian have beat that final shred of kindness and hope out of her heart?

With a deep breath, she tipped the flask back and downed the remaining liquid. When she looked back at Emril, he had a wide grin on his rosy face.

“Yeah, I like this version of you so much better,” he purred, draining the rest of his flask.

Brela smirked.

And they took off in a run toward the vaarasuxa.

Excerpt (from Star Supernova):

Isobel stalked around me, an evil glint in her eye. “Describe it.”

“It’s a rhythm inside me,” I said, matching her pace as we circled the sparring room. “I can extend that to the energies outside me.”

“Magnetospheres and solar winds,” she said. I almost stutter-stepped as Isobel grinned. “You aren’t the only one who knows how to use the Internet.” She actively ducked under one of the blueish wisps of light that I had created around the room, not that it would hurt her. She spun again, her gaze never leaving mine as we continued to move. “Tell me about your ex.”

“What?” The lights disappeared instantly. Not even fading out; they were just gone the minute I froze.

“Ha!” Isobel shouted, standing straighter. “Focus.

I growled. “You’re cruel.”
